Nine8Six...congrats on the amazing work. I watched the thread on your projectors and your work is meticulous, great R&D.
I'm very interested in seeing the finished product and maybe getting one if it will ship to Canada! |
Thanks! Yea we're good on the Canada shipping that's no worries there.
I'll update soon and hopefully have a fully developed LED Illuminated Wind Deflector kit for Boxster 986 by the end of Nov. Too slow, I know. Apologies to those who are waiting |
Subscribed!! Amazing work! I'm in for one as well!

I think my little edge lighting thingy here is The Best In-The-World lol
Anodized, fitted and... can't stop playing with it (funny set-up) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/011416565487.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/021416565498.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/031416565506.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/041416565517.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/061416565548.jpg |
Just the etching job/custom window alone looks nice ;) Sharp frosty stuff.... bye bye stickers for me!

the things you do sometimes lol
Too bad you quoted that... I would have removed this stupidity. Not even funny.... Porsche'tastic... what on earth (pmma vapors you think?) |
Any progress on a preferred power supply yet?
Something straight-forward for us who might be worried about screwing up:D |

The car is 12VDC everywhere so that where/what PS issue shouldn't become an impediment. I'm thinking about tapping into the ashtray's light circuit... lead dropping/hiding behind driver carpet, and flows under the console up to the ashtray compartment. I think you don't even need to remove the console to get it done... just push in the wire with your finger under it and catch it with a hanger from the ashtray compartment - then pull lol. Something like that... has to be easy. We'll see, I'll let you know what I did on mine for sure |
Quick Update:
Right... so these LED are bright - NOT subtle at all when ran over the full car 12v intensity lol You will be arrested, handcuffed and spend 30 days in jail for-sure if you run this thing on your car at full brightness (tried it on a dark night, in the garage, on my boxster). No thanks lol
And I can't really reduce the number of LED otherwise I won't be getting that wide angle light pattern. Required if your visual is wide e.g. you need the light to be the same intensity on both left & right side of the visual to make it look, real? cleaner... sharper etc Solution: a dimmer :/ We're giving simplicity a whole new meaning already lol Seen a few already-made LED dimmers here locally but all very strong looking (4" sq boxes and stuff, white color, cheap plastics, etc). Others looked more like household items instead of car parts and the rest had features on them that would just add up to the things that can go wrong. Who wants strobe and flashing features on theirs?! So there you have it again, we'll just make our own. Been experiencing with PWM (Pulse width modulation) and narrowed down the best two. Saying best because those are the only I found under $1,750 that have an audible On/Off click feature on them lol Other than that they have the highest freq I could find >25kHz so no LED flicking and no interference with mobile phones radio or anything. What that PWM board does is power on/off the LED and dim the intensity (5%~100%). That's all! I know, boring lol At last, a very important part (to me). Because that's all what it took to get this panel to look absolutely stunning and right-where-I-dreamed-it "Barely visible, but crazy nice when spotted". Soooo happy I haven't wasted my time, so this is going ahead! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/011416993647.jpg ^ Below the glass is the two PWM modules selected for the job. I'm in discussion with the supplier to see if he can drop the price from 1,750 to let's say $5 each. On my side I'll design and CNC a small little box that will look good in our cars, and 'hopefully' small enough to be concealed in the ashtray compartment. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/021416994626.jpg ^ Equally happy to have received the led. Shipped out of Taiwan last week (samples, all colors). Man.... those PINK.... speechless |
Stunning work ! Looks fantastic can't wait for the final product.
|
These sort of things never passes final stage. Wait until you see the mkII with a clearflex svga display... Ras Pi driven OBD Bluetooth reader with live dials showing on the windscreen HUD style. You get to see your car's gut stuff LIVE right up there in your mirror.
(^really hope I'm joking here). PMMA, sniff that stuff, gives you wings lol Happy Thanks Giving to you guys there! |
Same to you! Really admire your work; just amazing.
|
Looking great! Can't wait for the finished product:cheers:
|
Wow that is looking really good. You are da man!
Your attention to detail is awesome. |

I've been following this thread since it's inception. You are truely amazing at product development. I like the windscreen and am waiting till it's available. I hope you have a good weekend and wish you the best to you & your family. Happy Holiday |
How about 2-3 layers of PMMA, each with their own LED strip and etch for an overlaid, multicolored, multilayered 3D effect? :D
Joking, of course...it would probably look cool, though  |
Interesting enough, this is exactly what those Japanese do. 4 colors... requires 4layer of pmma each with its independent LED color. Not a bad idea but gives a bit of a headache in all honesty
They also cast pmma with built-in micro mirrors (no kidding) and position them so a laser beams can create patterns and shapes. The other one they have on display is the holographic 3D windeflector. Don't ask me how they do this... above my head lol The one I've seen was a V12 engine (Lamborghini or something like that...). Now that my man was impressive. They do those for roadsters and convertibles while some other dudes call themselves the Best in the World LOL * Not going to link anything/anymore or post wild pics here (LOL) so use your EN~JP translator and lookup for 3D wind deflector or around those keywords if you want to find them |
Reality is PMMA multilayer vision will be for another life for me ;)
Just got a tracking no. from the seller of the PWM module so we're all good on doing the modeling of the LED control box. Shark vents and all.... luxury dimmer lol http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/031417057823.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/041417057833.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/051417057842.jpg Got to go walk the dogs...... |

All the very same to you! Out of town for two days so I'll be able to pickup work on the wind deflector this coming Sunday eve. Little boxes... who would have imagine lol |
2 words: "Awesome work!" or "Awesome Nine8Six"
After you're done with this fantastic project, i have another cool idea (illuminated interior) for you! |
An illuminated Alu Boxster Logo in the little batwing.
I used a key chain Alu logo, which came with the back then brand new Boxster, stuck it into a milky plastic frame, used amber/yellow leds from an illuminated stick shifter to put them behind it and used the ashtray led Powerline to connect them with. The picture is very roughly photoshoped to give you an idea, how it looks illuminated. I am sure, you could come up with a TOP Quality solution for that...or maybe even better ideas. :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1417286530.jpg |

Didi you run out of space on the horseshoe and the ash tray? |
yuppers... (easy task after 14 years of ownership) ;)
Batwing: +2 switches CD-holder: +2 switches (with re-designed icons; photo is not quite up-to-date) The original concept (no one uses CD/DVDs anymore) & design (not even illuminated and just too plain in that spot) is old and obsolete now. Future idea is to install mini Sub+amplifier behind it, but keep the old-school front look & switches. |

How did you change the icons? |
Quote:
...sprint Booster ...night vision display ...foot well light Switch ...spoiler activation / controll lamp ...Garage door opener ...nail release button ...Sport exhaust mode ...rear/front cam switch ...secure sat-phone line to austin "Danger" powers ...microwave on/off ...Disco Ball on/off ...just grind them icons down till the milky-white layer shows, fine black ink pen, clear coating on top, polish, done. Not a biggie. :D |

While in the context of interior lighting... here goes some other glow-in-the-dark Top Secret project I've been working on. Simply meant to modernize the look & feel of the Porsche gauges... which in my opinion are a tad boring in their stock format. Design is simple, it's a copy of the common AL gauge bezels concept you find everywhere but custom made to accommodate micro LEDs. Also requires a custom made PCB that sit behind a diffuser made out of PC (frosty finish). All of that hardware squeeze inside the bezel, and sits on top of the gauge's face. All it does is glow on the face of the gauges. I've put up the idea with the local Pcar community here and got pretty good feedback. Some also recommended adding Sequencial Shift Lights (SSLs) around the tach's bezel (top). Concept: microcomputer taps onto the RPM pins from the OBD harness, interpret that signal, lights up LEDs according to the rpm range! Perfect useless gadget for the little Ricer in us ;) However I must say the gauge glow thing is phenomenally beautiful... having seen a prototype working already (in red, of course). http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1417375910.jpg Perhaps in 2015 I'll get back to this work - we'll see. I want my WIND DEFLECTOR before ;) |
Quick update on the Wind Deflector:
Been a while, sorry. Was off to HQ for our monthly last Friday's meeting and came back late Sat. I do appreciate these meetings as I get to see the team one month older each time lol
Design and Cam work is final on the LED controller box (the dimmer!). I had one spare 40" long 6013 billet aluminum slab so I've cut 15 stock pcs out of it to manufacture those little boxes. Great number because it matches the order the supplier of the PWM module sent me - I've received 15 of those little boards. So one for my boxster, and 14 spares lol Also did (another) fixture to machine those control boxes. Goes fast... top & bottom machining operations, off to anodize and laser at last. Takes about 20min per box all together (not assembled!). Great results, very satisfied with the quality. Solid, non-plastics, PWM works flawlessly and it has an audible on/off "click"... how marvelous lol http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/081417376169.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/071417376371.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/091417376191.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/101417376200.jpg NEXT: Electric. Cabling, MOLEX connectors! NEXT, NEXT: INSTALLATIONNE!!! |
Very nice work:cheers:

There we go!!!

Mine will be ON all the time lol Can't wait in all honesty.... (pissing rain, windy & cold here. at the shop cutting those blades as I type!!!!) |
Just wanted to keep this thread active, so others that didn't see it before would take notice. I think there would be quite a bit of interest in this for their Boxsters.
