a dead blow hammer absorbs a lot of the impact from the strike, so when hitting the install tool, a lot of the force went into the hammer instead of the tool so it was like being "tapped" instead of "hit."
jakes suggestion was to use a hammer that will deliver most of the force of the strike, after which he believes the installation completed.
