There is. But I bought them a few years ago to fit a BMW. They didn't fit the ring of the speaker grill. And you need a good amp because MB Quarts need a lot of power.

Would this diy apply to an 03 model?

I used infinity speakers and made an adapter plate as I did not want to destroy the factory speakers |

I went to a few local stores that have auto speakers on demo and liked them over other speakers. Also, they are more sensitive, so they are louder with lower radio volume settings. That means lower amplifier distortion for a given sound level. From the specs I saw on these and other speakers, they are one of the most efficient 4" speakers available Infinity REF-4002cfx Infinity Reference X REF-4002cfx 4" 2-way speakers at Crutchfield.com I did not get them from Crutchfield, got them on ebay Therer are also some older models around 4022 and 40??? that a a few $ cheaper. Do a search on ebay and amazon Send me a PM with your email and Ill send you a pdf template for the adaptor plate I made. I did get the wiring adapters from crutchfield Here is the link to my post with pictures http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/52740-upgrading-dash-speakers.html |
+1 on the Infinity reference speakers. I had the opportunity to listen to several competing brands at the Fry's display, kicker was one, and the others sounded like the kicker which were ok, but not really impressive. The infinity speakers opened up the sound big time, there was no comparison.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/9811403833296.jpg I did sacrifice the old boxster speakers using a dremel tool to cut the original speaker so I could use it as a mount for the new speaker, a heat gun to bend the speaker connector into place, and then soldered a wire from the original speaker connector to the new speaker. I did a lousy job of photo documentation, but it is straightforward when the parts are all laying on the table. |
Frys, the store you love to hate, or is it hate to love ???
Didn't know that had one in Houston My local one had the Infinity, Kicker, Alpine, Polk and Pioneer It was a tossup between the Infinity and Polk I probably should have bought the older Infinity ones and saved $10-15 Next project is installing the rear speakers. Will probably go with Infinity for them as well |
I used the Polks. I agree that it's kidda a toss up between the Infinities and the Polks. The Infinities sound a little better, but the Polks are very close. I got a good deal on the Polks so I went with them. I used the old speaker as a mount as well. I also added some 3.5 Polks to the rear, and some shallow mount Kicker Subs to the door. The whole system sounds fantastic.

Hey, I am back here reading this again as I need to replace the speakers in the 996! Since the 996 is a coupe and quite a bit quieter than the Boxster, I think that I'll spend a little more and go with the Infiniti's both front and rear.

The best deal I found was on eBay for the Infinity speakers I bought I have a mounting plate drawing if you need it for the dash speakers and do not want to destroy the factory speakers. Its for the 986, so should be good for the 996 as well I think I posted it in the DIY section |

I found a good deal on the Infinity's at Amazon - 50% off the Crutchfield price!
|
I am about to get some Infinity speakers too, and other websites have them cheaper than Crutchfield. The only thing is, I can't find the included speaker harness (Metra 71-017C from Crutchfield) anywhere else. I wonder if there's an alternate part number or description?

Just completed the dash swap with a pair of new Kicker 40CS44. The old speakers fell apart in my hands; one was only half intact when I took it out. Huge difference. That little stock amp is finally able to do its job with some authority. Some more bass would be nice but the system is at least listenable now.

Where did you buy your Dash Speaker Replacement? is ebay or other online auto parts warehouse stores recommended?
I mean, yeah they have good reputations online but are the products original or quality tested? |
