I'm isntalling a remote keyless entry and will post the details here. Can anyone guide me on the best (easiest) place to tap into the wireing loom?

Remote Keyless Entry... as in the key with the remote on it that you push a button on to unlock the doors?

Or something like a SmartKey... where you just get close to the car with the 'key' in your pocket and it unlocks itself?

Help

Ok Iv'e had the remote unit for a while and got some time today to have a look at it. I figured the best place to start was at the centrol locking control unit which is located under the passengers seat (Left Hand side of car)

That part was easy. I printed out my wireing diagram & tried to work out how to patch it into the existing system.

The instructions I got with the unit weren't much help as they were designed for a install from nothing.

From what I can determine the door units require a pulse of +12VDC on each of the 2 wires coming from them wire to lock & unlock.

I metered the outputs from the central locking control unit & found 4 outputs, 2 that had +12VDC pulsed when lock activated & 2 that had +12VDC pulsed when unlock activated.

So I thought this is going to be easier than I though. Wrong......

1st I tried to just slice into the existing wiring but that didn't work it seamed like the remote output was being dragged down so I cut the wire and connected the lock output from the remote control unit directly to one of the wires that I thought lead to a door unit.

Well that work but both doors locked when I assumed just 1 would. Ok no big issue to then I connected one of the unlock wires nothiong happened. No unlock. So I tried the other and still no go.

So I conected everything back together & it all works ok except that the LED indicator for when the doors are locked no longer works.

So if anyone could give me some hints on how to get this sorted I would appreciate it.

Thanks

So your saying that Porsches don't come with keyless entry standard in Australia?

Nope

2000 2.7 keyed central locking. Keyless didn't become standard until 2003 I think. I know is sucks $110K for a car & you still need to use a keys to open it. LOL

Yeah, Boxster's cost twice as much (at least second hand they are) in Oz cf US. And you get less kit with it.

Anyway, have you tried reading error codes with a OBD2 scanner?

How about unplugging the battery to try to reset the central locking indicator?

Maybe splice into the actual switch would be a better idea. You probably know this but the outputs of the remote central locking device isn't really designed to actually power the actuators. It's meant to provide a switching signal to trigger the relays that control the actuators.

Thanks

Thanks Jinster,

I'm unsure what the tiggers are from the switch to lock & unlock the doors. I found the inputs & I think the might just place an earth of each input from the switch to trigger lock/unlock respectively. I might have to run a relay because the outputs from the remote unit just provide pulsed +12VDC when swithced.

Yes all cars over hear are much more expensive. If I bought my Boxster in the US I probably would have paid US$15K-$20K I suppose. In Oz I paid US$46K. Big difference. Parts are also a lot cheaper. Whereever it is viable I import bits & pieces fromthe US for both my Porsche & BMW.

Any other assistance in getting this remote working wouyld be appreiated.

Thanks
