Cutting off steering lock
howdy all, going through the process of turning the car into a race car with a push button start. As part of that, I'd like to cut off the steering lock.
Can anyone circle exactly what I need to cut off and where?
thanks

My recollection is that the bottom right corner of your photo is where the cyclinder tab slides in and out depending on the key position. I think that with the key removed, the tab is "out" which protrudes into the steering column and physically locks the steering wheel; and when you turn the key "on", the tab retracts so as to unlock the wheel. So the procedure is to turn the key off and remove it so the tab protrudes; saw off the tab. Thus the tab will never protrude and never lock the wheel.
(Not sure why the tab is not protruding in your photo with no key...)
Found a before and after photo here at the very bottom of the page:

If you are going to a push to start button, why not ditch the lock housing.
You need to keep the key and the antenna together for the immobilizer. Wire up an ignition "on" switch and then a button for the starter.
I have not done this yet but this is what I intend to do after the season is over. The Bentley wiring schematic looks simple for this mod.
I can promote it since I haven't done it.
Otherwise the photo reference trygve posted is spot on.

I'd be happy to do so. I was not sure where the ignition "induction ring" was, i figured it might be contained in that assembly. The key pill needs to be next to that, so if its separate from that part, I'm happy to junk the whole lock assembly.

ok so I learned that the induction ring is part of the ignition tumbler.
So yeah, can just ditch this whole assembly

My thoughts were to keep the pill in the key and then ziptie/tape it to the antenna/induction ring. Then just fix it somewhere the wires allow.

I was planning on pulling the pill, taping it to the tumbler, hiding that up in the dash, and then running a locking switch for the "ignition on" and a momentary switch for the ignition over to the center console. My 2 hangups were the steering lock removal (saving that part for winter when I tear the dash down) and the wiring schematic details (ive got the fsb, its just a horrible pain to follow that ****************).
