Continued from: http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-racing-forum/44977-boxster-race-car-step-1-a.html

I dropped by Hergesheimer Motorsports today to see Eric523 and check on the build. Here are some pic's;

The wrecked silver car (left) is mostly stripped with the engine/trans/rear suspension sitting on the ground beneath it. The black Boxster (right) will have its blown engine/trans/susp removed and the parts from the silver car installed.

The right front fender has already been re-deployed to another Spec racecar that had some damage.

Here is what it looks like underneath the fender with the front suspension still intact.

So excited for you.

These kinds of builds are always so much fun to read about and see happen.

joe shmoo 05-23-2013 07:01 PM

subscribed. good luck with the build. ;)

Yes, very excited. Ready to pee my pants.

Best guess is 4-6 weeks. Depends on how backed up the cage builder and paint are.

thstone 05-29-2013 07:24 PM

** UPDATE **

Engine, transmission, suspension, etc has all been swapped over! Car even passed smog today. I think it looks pretty bad ass in all black.

Next - rip out the interior in prep for the cage install! We're just getting warmed up...

thstone 06-06-2013 05:14 PM

** UPDATE **

Interior is removed as part of the prep for the cage installation. The dash still needs to come out so the cross brace under the dash can be welded in.

The driver side inside door panel will be cut out to provide clearance for the side bar which will protrude out into the interior of the drivers door. The passenger side will be a simple x-style.

Car should go to the cage builder next week.

stone, been waiting for an update - how is she coming????

Brad

thstone 07-17-2013 08:22 PM

There was a bit of a delay waiting to get to the front of the line for the cage build. Here are a few pic's on the progress. Only thing left is adding a vertical support for the windshield frame (as shown by the red line).

whoa!! see what happens when you are busy (me) and step away from the computer!! GO TOM!!

Had no idea the silver car had an *issue* :( Sorry to see hear that!!

Brad Roberts 07-18-2013 12:57 PM

A lot was learned from that wreck at WSIR back in Dec. 12.

I'd like to purpose a rule change mandating ALL Boxsters have what we call "FIA" bars added (FIA is the org who mandated that tube for all FIA sanctioned events)

911_lurker 07-18-2013 01:12 PM

Brad, where are the FIA bars located? I'm getting a cage build soon and might as well get them put in.

-td

Brad Roberts 07-18-2013 01:34 PM

As seen in RED!!

http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6cb6c1c.jpg

TC Design in SJ installs them now...

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...02198499_n.jpg

Brad Roberts 07-18-2013 01:37 PM

TD,

the windshield post in a Boxster is only supported halfway up (with a Boron steel tube) so it folds over right at that point :barf:

What was easily visible from the WSIR crash? The A pillar tube folded inward JUST like the stock A pillar folded :barf:

Ad the FIA tube you see... and help keep this from happening :)

Brad Roberts 07-18-2013 01:38 PM

TD?

who is doing your cage? Todd@ Topp or the guys south of Dallas off of 35? SHOW them the blue car pic with the tube in place!!

yes, indeed.

the accident of which Brad speaks...

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...D8C3AFFCC5.jpg

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...D8DE8C68EB.jpg

and the resultant additions to my car after the inspection. The FIA bars were only one of the several additions. Granted, my cage was already beefier in material and diameter choice but it doesn't hurt to add more tuning. (well, other than the obvious weight penalty) The new 991 cup cars have a very similar bar in the factory cages this year too.

Brad Roberts 07-22-2013 11:18 PM

Thank YOU!! (Eric) for posting the pics. It **should** be really clear for those who "waffle" on the decision!!

thstone 08-08-2013 02:27 PM

The cage is complete! Vertical supports under the windshield installed along with upper and lower gussets on the side x-bars. It took a little time but was worth waiting to get the best quality. Next is paint and then back to HRG for final assy.

I love the smell of 4130 chromemoly in the morning! :)

Thanks for the update - while we hope you will never have to test it, it certainly looks to be incrediby solid and well engineered!

Brad

thstone 08-16-2013 04:36 PM

Paint is complete! Ready for final assy, a new set of Toyo RA1's, and alignment/corner balance. I'll post up some more pic's Monday night after I drop by HRG to take a look in person.

Very cool.

What do you do with all those cables to protect them?

Sure looks like a lot of work to do in the dash area too.

Its very interesting to see what goes on in the build.

Appreciate you posting the pics and description.

Once the dash is back in, all of the cables will get routed and tied down neatly. The fuse box will also get relocated.

Ian, thanks for the offer but the work is being done by the experts at Hergesheimer Motorsports in Lake Forest. It would take me a month of Sunday's (or longer) to do this much work myself (and it wouldn't be even close in quality).

thstone 08-21-2013 09:05 PM

Progress is coming fast and furious! Wiring complete, dash installed, doors installed, passenger seat & harnesses, light weight battery, electrical kill switch and wiring, roof net, etc...

http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1e3ffb27.jpg

http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfb64abb.jpg

Thanks Eric and everyone at HRG.

BruceH 08-22-2013 06:51 AM

Looking great!

jb92563 08-22-2013 11:39 AM

So when/where are we going to see your first race when it all gets done?

I rode along in a race prepped car at an Autocross once and it was like a bag of cats exploding off the line and then in every direction at once around the course.

It was a good thing I was wearing a well fitted helmet as my head was banging around on the roll bars from the insane acceleration and what I can only describe as Jinking vs steering around the course.

I don't know how the driver kept it on the track let alone avoiding all the cones in the Auto-X.

The lightness and increased HP really brings out a whole new dimension in the Boxster.

The car will be completed tonight - I'm picking it up tomorrow morning. Will be at AutoClub Speedway in Fontana, CA on Sat and Sun!

I feel like I'm 9 yrs old and am picking up my new Schwinn Stingray tomorrow. :D

Ian c 08-22-2013 07:56 PM

Woohoo !!!
I'm coming watching :D

Eric523 08-22-2013 10:44 PM

you all can feel free to come join us at the event! We will have a huge stable of Boxsters in various levels of modification hitting the track. Mornings are loaded with practice sessions, afternoons hold wheel to wheel races and time trials. Everything is free and the competitors are *usually* pretty friendly!

I took a bunch of progress pictures today but I'm keeping them secret until we can surprise stone with the car tomorrow!

Topless 08-23-2013 11:49 AM

Well I might just have to swing by AAA Speedway for a peek tomorrow.

thstone 08-23-2013 02:38 PM

Here it is! Man, I couldn't be happier. Eric, Mark, Laura, Evan, Tyson, Bobby, and the entire team at Hergesheimer made the reveal this morning just like a TV show. Thanks to Alex aka Little "t" for the color combo! I'll post up some more pic's later, got to go and get it ready for tomorrow.

Dave and Ian, please come on by anytime this weekend! There will be quite a few Spec Boxsters and a couple of Cup cars with us (along with Eric's insanely fast 3.6 Boxster). Run group schedule (I'll be in White/Yellow) is here: https://porscheclubracing.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/ACSINFO82413.pdf
