Track Video at AutoClub Speedway

Here is a video from last Saturday at AutoClub Speedway. This was a test day running in the open passing group with a professional instructor to tune up before next weekend at the POC Laguna Seca timetrials. This run group was fairly small so I had a lot of open track to work on technique rather than worrying about traffic.

The key techniques that we worked on were getting back onto the throttle as soon as possible in a corner, keeping the car balanced, and driving smoothly.

It was a very hot day (105F) so the lap times were a bit slow. Also, my speedo reads at least 5mph faster than the GPS speed in the video. I am flat out on the throttle from the begining of the front straight and never let up through Turns 1 and 2 on the banking. The new Boxster Spec suspension is fabulous!

Nice laps. Very smooth and consistent lines.

Great driving and video; a few questions:
--which camera and mounts were used? resolution?
--does PCA have any specs for external mounted camera mounts? I see a lot of cars with them and since this is a PCA event wondered if they have decided only a particular mount would be allowed.
--what type of video editing program was used?

Terrific setup to see what is going on inside and outside and outside the car especially to confirm if you're hitting the apex in a turn.

Awesome video Tom. I'm drooling for the car, the track, and mostly the driving skill. You must have a modified oil pan to address potential oil issue and the track banking?

The camera's were GoPro HD. This was an open DE track day operated by SpeedVentures, not a PCA event. I am not sure of the PCA camera mount rules - Topless?

The video was professionally edited, I am not sure of the software that they used. Contact Mary at CaliPhotography.

And yes, I have an EBC oil baffle in the stock pan. Details and photos here: Oil Starvation

PCA Z8 now requires firm mechanical camera mounts with tether, no suction cups. After sweeping up bits-o-GoPro from the exit of turn 2 at Fontana they decided to tighten the rules a bit.

Speedventures is interesting, definitely the wild west of track days. Very few rules which can be both good and bad. The last time I ran with them in open passing I saw 4 cars completely totaled at BW. Two right in front of me in Sunrise, and two got together and rolled off the outside of Riverside. Spooky. It looks like you had the track pretty much to yourself at Fontana though. That must have been nice.
