Yup

That's right. However, my 97 has had 15w-50 (the oil that came in it) in it since it was built and it hasn't had a problem yet.

Actually, you are both right. The 15W-50 was what Porsche recommended early on in the Box and it is still OK to use in hot weather situations.

However, the 0W-40 has been factory fill for some time and should handle most situations.

For everyday driving, the 15W-50 will use a bit more gas and create a bit more heat. If you live in cold climates, I would stay away from the 15W-50 as it will make starting your car a bit more work.
