Speakers and Exhaust additions

I have a 1999 Boxster and wonder about making two changes:

1. Installing the GHL exhaust system
2. Adding rear speakers

Since I am a new owner, I don't know squat about doing either of these.

Can speakers even be added...gosh, where would you put them?

Has anyone had any experience with the GHL exhaust system? I wouldn't install it myself -- but wonder if the change in sound and/or performance is worth the money.

Thanks for your comments.

ghl woudl be easy to put on.

and who needs better speakers when u put the top down? hehehe
and yes, porsche sound system has to be the worse thing ever invented, but then again i listened to the radio/CDs in my car total of 5 times ever since i bought it, just listening to that engine at higher RPMS beats any band/singer thats on there anyway

Hi Gene,

To install rear speakers you will need the rear storage compartment.

here is what is entailed in doing this:

You can get the speaker kit from this guy on ebay.

There are a few posts on the forum regarding the GHL's sound, ultimately it looks like a matter of volume and low rpm resonance preferences, although I would definitely say considering the price of a GHL system (headers & mufflers), it probably isn't worth it performance-wise

If you are looking for inexpensive (as far as Porsche goes) exhaust that sounds good and will add some hp , check out this thread...

I hope this helps a little.

What part of Atlanta are you in? I am in Smyrna and work on Cobb Pkwy in Atlanta.

If you realy want a good sound and perfromance, I would add the catalytic bi-pass pipes to your exhaust and headers. They are legal and you will still pass emitions. Here is the link. Epiq, one of our site sponsors sells them.

with a '99 you [should] already have the pizza box that houses the rear speakers. It has a sliding doors in the middle and 2 cubby holes right behind each seat. You can go OEM or PNP (both can be found on ebay). I did PNP. The kits all have 2 pairs of 3.5" mounted in the outward storage area of the pizza box. You can hook them directly up to your head unit (which drives them w/ 18W each), get a separate 2 ch amp, or find a used 6x40 amp from a 996 and swap it in where your stock amp is. Search the archives for the following and you'll get more info than you'll ever want:

stereo upgrade in steps
rear speaker kit
sound system upgrade

Good luck and congrats on your new ride!

Thanks to All for the comments -- gene

Thanks everyone for the excellent suggestions and recommended research.

I did want to admit that I too love the sound of the engine and often just leave the radio off.

Who knows, when I get the opportunity to drop the top -- I may never listen to the radio/CD
