This would mean that the old plugs and coils were still in order and the pump was starting to go. You would have to check all the old plugs and measure the coils or check the pump straight away.

It would be interesting to read what was ultimately the cause...

SO just to close this post off, it was the crankshaft position sensor which had died. a real ******************** to change as you need the longest Hex bit you can find
