What is this hose and is it supposed to be connected to something?

Just noticed this hose flopping around loose near the battery. It comes from the general area on the back side of where the fuel filler cap is. I've outlined it in red below:

This is the battery vent hose. There should be a port on rather side of your battery. The positive terminal cap should have come with a plug to block off whatever side you don’t connect to the hose. You do need to hook up the vent because lead acid batteries vent gas while charging and those vapors can and do build up leading to corrosion.

If you have an AGM battery, there will NOT be any vent ports so you do not need to worry about that tube. Most owners w AGMs typically zip tie the tube unto itself or out of the way. Then it's not just flopping around or interfering w/ battery install/removal which is a cumbersome enough task.

PS - Hard to tell, but looks like your battery tray could use some loving... if it's overspray, or dirt fine. If it's previously spilled battery acid corrosion, hit w some baking soda/water to neutralize. Then a quick sanding and rattle can repaint (outside of vehicle of course) will make it look spotless again. Nothing tougher than trying to diagnose issues when previous stains/leaks/etc. are prevalent.

If you drive your car like I do, connect the tube.
That crap on the tray could be from the open vent.
