I didn't realise I needed a new windshield...

... till I drove into the setting sun last week. There was so much pitting that it was very difficult to see out. I took this photo of the weird reflections I got. When not in direct setting (or rising) sunlight it was OK.

Unfortunately, it's the same for me. I wait until i have a bigger damage that justifies the removal. Because you have to find a company that does it according to the P-regulations. If you tell them that neither the rear-view mirror can be installed nor the windows closed before a waiting time of minimum 3h and they nod and smile, you're fine. You have to avoid those who look at you in disbelief.

Why?

I've a winddshield that is going to be replaced and... while I trust my 15-years+ glass guy... I'd like to know.

Porsche's instructions explicitly stipulate a waiting time of 3 hours after applying the adhesive before the windows can be closed and the rear-view mirror can be fitted. While the mirror is obvious I understand the point about the windows (with the door closed), because they "brace" the door/frame system. If it is allowed to harden in the "stressed" state, it makes a difference later in operation.
I don't know if you can tell the difference, but it is explicitly stated in POSES and thus makes the difference to an improper work. Btw, the 996 + 997 windscreen change instructions stipulate the same.

All that I see in POSES on the topic is what’s below. Nothing about mirrors or windows, just the 3 hour cure time.

Danger of material damage if specified curing time of adhesive is not observed!
The vehicle must not be used until the curing time has elapsed.
In order to ensure that the bonded joint is sufficiently strong, the following boundary conditions must be adhered to:
Curing time: 3 hours
Temperature: at least 10°C
Fixing time: approx. 1 hour

The introductory sentence is:

"The available data includes technical information, descriptions of repair work on Porsche vehicles and training literature. The descriptions are intended exclusively for workshops and their workshop personnel."

Most likely that the wait is to prevent outward forces on the glass prior to adhesive set.

You are correct! How about that…

FWIW, the shop which replaced mine certainly didn’t let it sit for 3 hours. That was ~4 years ago, and, aside a fresh set of chips (the car is a year round daily driver), nothing negative to report.

I need a new windshield in my Cayman, as it's been sandblasted by track use and winter beater duty. Even has a pinkie sized chip that I've fixed myself. But I've been reluctant to change due to the stickers from various tracks that I'd lose - 4 COTA, an Indy, and a Kansas Speedway. Two from 2015 and two from 2016. At some pt I'll have to replace it but I'm going to hold on as long as I can. Might have to go w/ track maps on the rear window then.

The shop that I used didn't wait 3 hours either. They did put masking tape over the molding at the top and sides and instructed me to leave it on for a day and not to wash the car. It strikes me that the POSES instructions discussed here were likely issued at least 20 years ago for the Porsche products used at that time. Dare I suggest that the adhesives used today are totally different?
