Boxster Caliper Fell Off

Felt a bump and then horrible grinding noise coming from the left front wheel of my 98 Boxster 986.

I tow it home and look to see that the caliper had fallen off and got jammed between the rotor and wheel.

The caliper bolts were completely unscrewed.

Has anyone heard of this? Those bolts are threaded for 3-4 inches. How could they have both come unscrewed? Anyone have a similar experience?

I did a brake job on it a few years ago and replaced all the bolts on all four corners and used thread lock. The other three wheels are fine.

Glad you were able to go back a few years and add blue threadlock on.

New caliper bolts too?

Good luck

No. Actually when I was changing my rotors I broke the head off of one of the bolts. I drove 15 miles like that to the shop. If I didn't break it off myself, I would have never known the difference. The brakes work like usual with the bolt head broken off. I ended up having to buy a whole new hub, even the shop couldn't get the bolt out. The rest of the bolts needed to be soaked with Kroil for days before they would come out.

Official Porsche procedure (as in Bentley) specifies these screws be replaced when removed, never reused.

Are you sure the hub has any threads left for the bolts to screw in to?
I've had to repair stripped threads twice so far with time serts.

I had the caliper bolts come loose on my 924S, right rear if I remember correctly. It started making a strange noise, I had a look underneath and found the loose bolts, hand tightened them and then to get home drove across Montreal south to north, in traffic, without touching the brake pedal! Downshifted to slow it down then used the hand brake to stop. My 2002 GMC pickup lost a bolt also. Again I hand tightened it and drove home using the brakes sparingly. I now am very conscious about torquing caliper bolts.
