They installed a Metzger GT3 engine. Seriously. No IMS. Problem solved.

I can assure you, the Metzger GT3 engine has an intermediate shaft.
(robustly designed and pressure fed plain bearings at both ends)

Yes - poor choice of words - different design and bearings. It doesn't have the IMS problems of the 9x6/9x7 engines.
