99 coolant light blinking

So my 99 coolant light started blinking this morning while driving my son to work. Engine temp was normal, no visible leaks, coolant level stable. Any thoughts?

A blinking coolant light can mean one of several things.
It depends on how fast the light blinks.
Do a search on the forum for blinking coolant light.
There is a thread where it is explained.

It has four things it can mean

Four functions of the coolant warning light:

1. Engine coolant level too low

— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)

2. Engine compartment temperature too high

— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)

3. Engine coolant temperature too high

— light is lit; pointer on the right

4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty

— light flashes rapidly (1 Hz); pointer on the right

Note

The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously

(1Hz = 1 flash per second. 0.5Hz = 2 seconds per flash)

Thanks JFP that is the info I was trying to point him towards

I was getting the slow flash (0.5 Hz) and my problem was solved by removing & re-tightening my coolant cap (NB: only do this when cold). I did subsequently have a coolant tank leak, so I'm not sure if this is a leading indicator.

Add one more….. loose or cross threaded coolant cap.

Mine blinked a few years back while driving. It turned out the coolant tank cap was cross threaded. Earlier in the day I had checked the coolant level before going for a drive and I did not put it back properly.

Sometimes the issue is the simplest fix.

I'd be pulling over letting it cool a bit before driving on. I did that 3 or 4 times and saved my engine from
Being disabled .For mine it eas water pump, thermostat, and resulted in cracked heater control valve.
Seems to run better now that its fixef, not just cooler on very hot days but smoother and even a bit more powerful. Why i have no clue..

Ran it on up to the Porsche dealership and had them scan it for me and talked to the service manager, he said likely a misfire as it hasn't been back on since the first time it came on this morning, said if anything water temp sensor might be faulty. Thanks everyone!

It would have to be very slow. There has been no perceptible change in the water level since I last changed fluids a few months back. No signs of any type of leak.
