Do you need a special tool to remove the oil filter? Do you need to remove the top engine cover or is it done underneath the vehicle? ...thanks

Do it from the bottom, I just used a strap oil filter wrench and a BIG drain pan.

If you search under "oil change" all your questions will be answered.

Hi,

From the bottom (as mentioned). you need a 74mm, 14 flute wrench to remove the Oil Filter Cartridge and properly re-torque it (can't do that with a Strap Wrench). See it here: http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp?ACTION=prod&TYPE=&CAT=&SUB=&prod=&Search=M0093B&PG=1&LowCt=0

You also need an 8mm Allen bit for the Drain Plug - http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=00942678000&vertical=Sears&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes (though it's probably more economical to get an asst. set of Hex Bits) and a Torque wrench to insure that everything seals properly and no threads are stripped (aluminum and Plastic)

In addition, you need a new Crush Washer for the Drain Plug - $0.50 (Pelican Parts), and an Oil Filter cartridge and 'O' Ring (included) - $11.50 (Pelican Parts), then a collection pan with 10+ Qt. capacity and of course the Oil. Hope this helps...

thanks for your informative response! Do you know the recommended pounds of torque to apply to each? Are the Mahle filters Pelican sells really the same as oem?

Hi,

Yes the Oil Drain Plug torques to 37 ft.lbs. (50Nm) and the Oil Filter Cartridge torques to 19 ft.lbs. (25.7Nm). Yes the Mahle Filter is the same as the OEM part, they are the supplier to Porsche. BTW, you can often reuse the Drain Plug Crush Washer one time by inverting it, so if you wanna save some pennies, be sure you keep track of which way it's facing when you remove it (I don't do this, but in a pinch, you could). Hope this helps...
