Sounds like your thinking it through carefully. And minimizing spousal stress is ever important.
I’d suggest you go find a 996 cab to test drive and see that you think. Even better if you have a buddy with one who will let you really stretch it’s legs more than some nervous seller. I’d look for a 4S cab if I were in your shoes for those extra wide hips. My father has a 964 cab and it’s a great car. I definitely missed the top down experience while owning my 993 coupe (which is a significant part of how I ended up back in a 986).
