Does Porsche still support old cars like their 912 ?

... or are you pretty much stuck finding whatever you can aftermarket or otherwise ?

Yes and no.
I have a 74 911 and most parts are still availble. There are a few things that were year specific to the model that are no longer available, but you can still get most things from OEM suppliers or from Porsche. However some parts are REALLY expensive. (i.e. fuel pump for a 74 is almost $600)

Sometimes you run into a part that is NLA but is made by other companies now since they saw it was a part folks need but can't get. And a few of parts on the early cars were identical to VW parts so you can also find some VW parts that work.

Now you can't normally take it to any old dealer when you need something fixed. You need to use other folks for that since the techs at dealership generally don't work on or have training on the older cars.

Hi,

Well Federal Mandates require that Manufacturers selling cars in the US must maintain a complete parts inventory for 10 years. After that, they usually only rely on whatever inventory they have on hand. In addition, the requirement allows Manufacturers to determine what that 10-year supply would be, so that's usually all that they will order from subs.

For a 912 (1965-1965 +1976 (912E)), the availability from Porsche is limited-to-non-existent. But, there is a wealth of NOS and replica parts available from the Aftermarket. Porsche built 34,959 912/912Es and maybe as much as a third to half of those are still on the Road. Parts are generally not a problem. But, as with most Classics, Go parts (Drivetrain, Suspension and Brakes) are usually more widely available than Show parts (Trim, Interior, Exterior Trim bits). Hope this helps...

If you cant find the parts you need at the Dealer, you can always find the OEM or close to OEM spec parts at Pelicanparts.com

There is some factory support back to 356s. Sometimes they break out old dies or suppliers if there is enuf demand for NLAs, but not often.

The link has useful downloadable parts catalogs.
