whine/whistle 2000 Boxster

My 2000 Boxster (non-S) 5-speed suddenly started making a whine or whistle. It seems to be dominant from the drivers side of the vehicle but I'm not 100% certain of that. My drive was with drivers side window down and every time a car passed in the other direction the noise significantly increased. It goes away with light throttle. With foot off the throttle that is when it is most noticeable. It is a constant pitch regardless of engine speed. Maybe, and I emphasize maybe, I have had a quick flash of one of the dashboard warning lights, perhaps brake fluid or ABS, but just a fraction of a second and I was unable to identity positively which light flashed.

Thoughts?

With colder weather, I get a temporary whining noise from the engine on start-up. But it goes away within a few minutes.

whine/whistle 2000 Boxster

I had a whistle on my 2000 when I first bought it, it was a loose spark plug!
I thought the belt was slipping.

The cold start whine you are hearing is most likely your secondary air injection system, which only runs briefly on cold starts.

Use of the word "whine" on my part is probably misleading. Whistle is the better term and it is pronounced and started well after reaching normal temperatures.

Use of the word "whine" for my issue is probably misleading. Whistle is the better term and it is pronounced and started well after reaching normal temperatures. And as I mentioned, just about any amount of throttle causes the noise to go away.

Thanks for the information!

An FYI, it turned out that the air/oil separator needed to be replaced. The key thing to look for was that when the whistle is occurring, you are unable to remove the oil fill cap.

Total price at an independent was slightly over $500.

Check your power steering fluid. When the fluid is low the car will make a whinning noise when the car is cold.

Wow! Car repair costs are going through the roof! I recently replaced my AOS and it was a real PIA. I could see $500 for the part and R&R.
