I've never had anyone who didn't get involved in an accident buy one from me. That I can remember at least. The R&P on these cars are pretty durable if properly taken care of. Does yours have a leak? Most of the time that's caused be a loose connection or bad O-ring where the hoses connect to the rack.

If you are feeling any binding while turning, check the bolts that hold the rack to the subframe, while it is more rare on the 986 Boxster, I had some binding in my 987.2 Cayman that was due to these bolts being loose, most likely due to a recent front swaybar installation, which requires these bolts to be loosened, unlike on the 986 (which is why I feel it might be more rare there)

Gabe, you may want to clean very well the area where the both of the hydraulic fluid tubes connect at the steering rack, as they have an o-ring (one each) that is very easily replaced, but those would make a mess if not sealing properly.

They are very accessible, if you remove the front driver side wheel they will be right in front of you, hopefully this is the cause.

Good luck!

Recently, I got a quote to rebuild a rack and pinnion from an Alfa and the OH cost was not really cheap ($400-500) but it came with a two year warranty.

Removal is straight forward, if I remember correct, besides replacing the seals at each end, they replaced one or two 'pillow bearings'..? or so.. (sorry, this was a couple of years ago..).

PS: a used rack from Woddie may be a bit cheaper..
