Naw.
Most have continuous recording and can accept micro SD cards with more than enough storage for a full 24 hours of recording.
I bought a lot of 2 for $16 several years ago and they have many features (1080p video with audio, impact, motion detection, night vision, loop recording, continuous, micro SD up to 64gb, etc.).

There's no need for anything too fancy if all he wants to do is record.

That all sounds pretty good. Maybe the cheapo cameras I got weren't as good as the ones you got.
