Question Grinding noise when turning - linked to engine speed (see video)

Hi all,

I have an early 1997 5 speed manual.

My car has developed a horrible grinding noise when turning left @ RPM > 1500 !

If I turn at any speed with low/no RPM I get no noise.

I'm thinking it could be engine/transmission mount related, but unsure.

If I open the lockable center glovebox (above the shifter cables), the noise gets much louder.

I'm not very good at discerning noises in those typ of video, but if you don't know when the engine mount was replaced last, it would be a good idea to go ahead and do it.

Also make sure that your power steering fluid is at the correct level and filled with the right fluid: Hydraulic Fluid CHF 202 or equivalent.

Anther 'grinding in turn' noise could be a wheel bearing, but I don't think that having the storage compartment lid open would make any difference in that noise.

- wow, coincidental but I actually watched all 8 minutes of your video yesterday as some 'light viewing' while ironing - great job, nice summary.

However unfortunately in my case, my mount was changed less than 6 months ago.

Power steering fluid is also topped up with the correct fluid.

I also don't think it's a wheel bearing as the noise varies with RPM rather than wheel speed.

I'm starting to think one of my shifter cables may have popped out of place somewhere along it's path, and is rubbing against the block during turns(?)

May explain why opening the glovebox amplifies the sound so much.

Will have to investigate deeper...
