Yeah, looks like that would work if you remove the skid plate. As it turns out, I ended up doing just the ends after all - after popping the ball joints out, the inners still felt very smooth. But mostly I didn't want to deal with the hose clamps on the boot. Another project for a rainy day, I guess.
Somehow I think I made my alignment better than it was before, go figure.
