And I somehow subsequently picked up a rock chip this weekend that made a little star right in my line of sight. Not a good weekend for my windshield. And that little mirror is terrible.
Necro-bump! Years later I finally figured out to properly replace the mirror. If you buy a new one, I think it comes pre-attached with the mounting. Or if yours falls off the ball, here's how to put it back on without busting your windshield! Like me!
Good info - too bad you had to learn it the hard way.
I jumped a little when I saw you take the channel locks, grab hold and twist. That would be enough for me to just take it to the glass shop and let them deal with it.
Thanks! I'll put this in my bag of tricks.

Thanks for update and video.

I shipped a mirror to someone a couple hours before I saw your video. It will be helpful. Thanks for posting.
I literally have been searching this whole time. I must not have been using the right keywords, alldatadiy doesn't cover it, bentley doesn't, the $10 ebay CD with the pdf doesn't, finally found an ancient old thread on renn tech . org that had some details and was able to find a solution. Maybe somebody can not do what I did to my windshield :-)
I think embarrassment is why I haven't filed a claim with my insurance to fix it :,-)

Reason: Typos
I had a windshield break trying to remove the mounting pedestal. Maybe it was bad luck? Either way I try a different approach. I use channel locks to install the mirror back on but I i use one jaw on the back of the pedestal and one on the mirror. I use shop towels instead of tape to cushion the mirror and pedestal. I've only had to do it 2-3 times but it's worked for me
