brake brand recommendations
Looks like it's time for new rotors and pads for my 2002 S. Street use only. What are some reasonably priced decent brands? Best bang for the buck? Worst brands?

Be careful if you go with PowerStop from Amazon. They had a problem with the listing which claimed compatibility with the 'S' but they were actually for the non-S. Just be sure to verify whatever you order with the PowerStop website.

I am extremely happy with my Zimmermans. They have zinc hats so they don't rust and get stuck.

I went with Hawk ceramic pads. LOVE them due to the significant reduction in brake dust on rims.

I've just put the first 100 km on my new ATE coated rotors and Textar pads from Pelican (rear set). So far so good

Meyle rotors and if centric makes pads for 2002S they are a great budget choice that us OE formulations, I run them on several other cars (not my Boxster though as it has track pads).
ATE makes good rotors, running them on the rear right now, but a touch pricier than the Meyle. Come to think of it, Meyle may make some pads too.

buy your rotors from FCP Euro and its the last set you'll need to buy.
Sebro or zimmerman are fine.

I ran Zimmerman rotors on the 986 and they were consistently good. I run Sebro slotted on my 987.2 and so far so good. I had a lot of problems with drilled rotors cracking due to heat so I moved away from them.
For street pads Texar are close to OEM. Some also like Hawk pads. I have not run a full street pad since 2007 so not much help here.

Also....
....an outfit called “Frozen Rotors” sells OEM rotors that are cryogenically treated so they should wear longer.
If you are a gentle street driver, the Akebono Ceramic pads from Tire Rack are super easy to live with with extremely low dust and zero noise. Not a pad for heavy use, but a great daily driver pad.
Otherwise, the Textars seem to be the hot ticket.

How were the raybestos st43 pads on the street? Squealing? Do they work with drilled Zimmermans?
Do they make a fit for 'S' / 996 (red) brakes

ST-43 is a phenomenal race pad and I have used them for 10 years now. I typically get 8k miles including 20 track days on the fronts, maybe more. Better heat management, modulation and life than RS-29s on my car. They can be custom-cut to any Porsche brake system at Porterfield in Costa Mesa.
Downside: They are designed for very high temps on a track and squeal like a school bus when cold on the street. I don't recommend them unless you hit the track a lot and need all the heat management you can get. Complete overkill for a DD or AX car.

I run different pads for different driving applications
Street Powerstop ceramic (low cost, no duct, stop on a dime and give a nickel change)
AX EBC Red
Track EBC Yellow
For rotors, best value is Meyle on Amazon Around $80/axle.
I have had no issues with mine for street, AX and track

For pads I'm running Textars (OEM). Not overly pleased with Akebono ceramics on my E320, however. Pagid is also good if available.

986S - actual setup:
18" rims
Sebro disks
Brembo HP 2000 brake pads
Brembo DOT 5.1 brake fluid
Braided brake lines
GT2 brake ducts
For me this setup works very well for european street use.

Just bought a set of front brake rotors and pads for my Saab, will see their warranty in 50K later... Do I have to wear the pads down to the metal?

I am running a set of Sebro slotted rotors in the front from them. They are still going strong, but I was wondering the same thing, when do they consider them to be done so I can send them back and get the next free set
