Exhaust upgrade

I have always wanted a more aggressive exhaust note for my 01 986 S. I first tried the cheap Ebay exhaust and the droning was just too much for me. Next I went back to the stock exhaust but added the PSE style pipes that allow a bit of the exhaust to bypass the muffler and go directly to the tips. No drone and a tiny bit louder but just OK. This week I replaced the secondary cats with the pipes off Ebay and think I have the right combination. Great raspy sound on acceleration (sounds aggressive but not obnoxious), no droning and not much louder while cruising at 2-3,000 RMPs. I'm very happy with this combination.

Exhaust

Did you use resonated or non-resonated secondary pipes?

Take a look at the below thread I posted regarding my purchase of secondary cat bypass pipes back in 2015.

Just curious, if you replace the Secondary Cats, isn't there an O2 sensor located on the cat near the muffler?

I did the Top Speed Muffler and 2nd CAT deletes on my "01 S' as well and you must do both or you will get that unbearable drone.

In a 986 with the 4 CATS, the 2nd cats near the muffler are NOT sensored.

The car will pass the CA Smog if you get the front CATs nice and hot before testing.

In Southern CA, Boxster's 2000 and newer now are smog tested only by plugging into the ODBII port to read the data. No more tail pipe detectors.

If you have no Engine light on, you will pass the SMOG.
