Own both and running costs is almost identical. The 996 uses a bit more fuel and tires are a bit more due to them being larger. Call this the cost of more horsepower. The other item that was a bit more was the labor on doing the clutch/AOS/IMS due to it requiring a few more hours of Labor.
If you are contemplating between a 996 and 986 with all things being equal the maintenance cost difference is not material in my opinion.
