Speed Yellow
Make sure to look at the torque difference. I heard that the base models got more hp over the years but not much more torque than the old 986 ever had.
Might be worth getting a 987 S over 981 base.
Depends on how much the platform difference is worth it to you. How much a truly luxurious interior and that little bit of extra refinement is worth and how much you value the go fast of the older car.
Also I'd argue as an investment the old S will hold value better, however this affect will likely be not as large as otherwise thanks to the 981 having a 6 speed.
P.s. There is a market for a yellow Porsche and resale won't be an issue, the highest listed 986s i ever see relative to year and mileage tend to be yellow and red and to my knowledge leave the market without many price drops. on an otherwise not very aggressive car in styling, The deep bee sting yellow of speed yellow makes up the difference.
The modern race yellow that I still think may actually be what's on your car is even better fit for today's roads and eyes while being more neon and gives Porsche sports cars a flare like the rest of the euro mid engine sort.

The age old question of the current version's base vs the previous version's S.
BigJake is wise beyond his years and makes some very valid points. Esp the one about an S holding value.
My blood starts rushing when looking at the pic of the Speed Yellow Cayman. The silver base... meh. To the casual neighbor, how will they know you got a new car if you show up with the base? They'll know with the S.
Since you asked us how to spend your money, buy the SY CS. If you get bored with it after a while, trade it in and get something else. Problem solved.

Personally I love Speed Yellow but couldn't find one for sale so got Arctic silver with Boxster red interior like the prototype.

Grays and silvers are too blah. Yes, I can appreciate the hilarity in me saying that.
I'd go for yellow.

I love my silver 986, but even I think you should go for the yellow CS. It's not a color that I'd buy just because I don't like yellow cars, but it's different and striking, and although not as easy to sell as silver, black, grey, someone out there will always like it in yellow, so you'll be able to sell it.

wow - not at all the responses i was expecting! I agree with the fact that the S will hold better value. the 2009 to 2012 S version are hard to come by but i think it is a matter that the cars are still new. The Newer S version of the 2014 are 10K more than non S - no matter what color or mileage. Is 10K to get a bump in HP and Torque in the newer models worth it? Cant afford it anyway. My wife told me to get out a couple months ago so just looking for a fun toy. The yellow car makes a statement...I agree.
Damnit - going to go flip a coin. I do like the refinement and the fact the 2014 is newer with hopefully less hassle. It is a fairly safe choice. the silver car has 8,000 miles on it. The yellow car (FYI listed a speed yellow so that is where I am coming up with the color. all the other pics show it in my opinion as speed yellow - regardless...IT IS A LOT OF YELLOW) is in need of a brake job, fluid flush, etc. I can try to work all that into the price but literally they are $2K different (that is if i can beat the guy down a couple grand...if not they are the exact same price. I already beat the silver one down to my comfort zone).
Decisions, Decisions

The 2014 NON S is the better car to drive.
Also personally i think it looks much better.
Just take both for a test drive and make your choice.

I'm generally pretty conservative with colour choices but I think yellow looks pretty good on Caymans, at least the 987. The 981 would be a better daily. The interior is nicer, its more refined, and the colour is more low profile. If a weekend fun car is what you're after, go for the yellow Cayman S. Your fun car should be impractical and say "look at me!".

Something that has been sort of mentioned but not directly - a 987.2 CS is a hot commodity due to the IMS-less engine and their low production numbers. This would work in your favor at sales time.
But this works against you if you take too long to decide. You can work them down on price b/c of the brakes, then DIY it and save yourself several hundred dollars.

I love my 02 S in speed yellow and for extra flair the center console is speed yellow too. Gloss black wheels with machined rims and carbon fiber roll hoops add the finishing touch.......
