rfuerst911sc: He said his key only has a button for a light - I assumed that kind of a key fob doesn't have a transmitter inside but maybe I'm wrong?

Unlock the car manually and get in, place the key into the ignition and turn to the ON position but do NOT engage the starter. Hold the button down on the key for aprox. 5-7 seconds. Release the button and turn the ignition off. Now hit the button and see if the door locks work. This scenario recently worked for me when my key stopped activating the keyless entry . Good luck .
