CEL troubles

Well my car has had no problems for a little over a year now, but my check engine light just came on.

Checked the gas cap and everything.

I'm curious if it could be from the smoke in the area from the recent wildfires or the fact I just recently had to leave the car in a gravel lot over the weekend? Could either of these cause a check engine light.

I was only about two miles from home at the end of a drive, the car ran fine as continued to drive and no weird noises smells or smoke.

The only thing that was odd right before the light came on was a vibration from the engine compartment.

I've noticed for a good while now that at times there will be a vibration when there is zero gas input and the car is decelerating in 5th of 6th gear, at least this is when I've noticed it. Letting off the gas at about 3,500 rpm a vibration starts at like 3,200 and doesn't stop until like 2,800. If you place your foot on the gas it stops. This doesn't happen all the time but it does occasionally and had just happened about 20 seconds before the light came on.

The vibration is either the flywheel or the front engine mount.

Impossible to tell what the cause of a check engine light is without knowing the fault codes!

Turning cold + closing throttle @ high rpm = max vacum = max load on AOS. Might be a weakening diaphram in the AOS. Post codes

The vibration you feel is almost certainly the motor mount

failing. Mine failed around 60-65k miles and now I have 98k on the car and it is needing replacing again. I have noticed that instead of having to buy the entire motor mount like I originally did, vendors have started selling the bushings that can be pressed in after the old one is removed....costs a little less than half what a new mount costs I think.

New aos installed around may 2015 and about 4K miles ago, I sure hope the aos is fine.

Hey Jake.... hope it is something simple. Perhaps a MAF Sensor. You need to get a code reader. Over the years it will pay for itself and it is very convenient to have around.

What is the likely hood of the smoke from the wildfires causing the CEL?

Incredibly unlikely. A check engine light only triggers when the same event happens a few times. You've got some issue that is causing a light. But if you know anything about these cars, you need to have the codes before we can even start guessing. Autozone would be a quick way to get them or buy a cheap elm 327 bluetooth module and the torque pro app for your phone. Good investment.

How about the actual code number(s)?

Sorry, my father got the car scanned while I'm back on campus and that's all he relayed. Said it was two codes for the same sensor bank 1

Had the same issue a few months ago but without knowing the exact code (Mine was a Po492?).

It was a bad diaphragm in the Air Oil Separator. Replaced it along with new top and bottom hoses.

The tech apparently said it's just an aging o2 sensor. Cleared the code and so far it hasn't come back. I'll let y'all know if it does.

Drove the car for a fair few miles since the code was cleared, no recurrence of the light yet.

O2 sensors are one of the easier fixes out there. If you buy a scanner and an O2 socket head (see below) you'll more than pay for them the first time you use them.

I miss your post Jake. I am guessing college is keeping you busy. Enjoy this busy hectic time in your life. It only comes around once!

Nailed it, pretty busy with college and I'm not even getting much of a chance to drive the car, only about 3 times a week.

However... I think I may hopefully have a surprise for the forum here in a few days!

Not to bump the tread with something somewhat unrelated.

The CEL has been out ever since with a few long distance drives since then, I guess it was some fluke.

But I still get the deceleration vibration around 3k i searched around and everyone points to motor mount. I haven't noticed much of a clunk under hard acceleration but I'm more of one to roll on the throttle anyways rather than stab it. I've noticed that there is a rattle at idle too, not a tick or anything internal but a loud large hunk of metal on metal sort of rattle at idle sometimes only noticeable from outside the car. Anyways I'm going to get up under the car and look at the mount tomorrow.

What are the other symptoms of a failing mount?

(I read somewhere that it can cause shifting issues, I've been stuck in 5th twice and third once, all separated over several months from some sleeve falling down on the linkage, I fixed it permanently with a pin, however I'm thinking I just fixed a symptom to a bigger issue now.)
