guess i never updated this. the guide provided above worked like a charm and with a 70$ tool i got on amazon (guess i should have tried and borrow one instead ) i got the job done and the top is tighter than ever. major pain fishing out the bits and in some cases i simply couldn't dig it out so i filled with silicone so that it doesn't jiggle about. it wasn't pretty but it did the job.

thanks for all the great tips guys! what i thought was another "crap i shouldn't have over tighten that" moment turned out to be a pretty easy fix.
