Engine Experts: What am I looking at here?

What exactly are the lines on the sides?

That is a crankshaft trust bearing, hopefully you didn't find it on the garage door....
Those channels are for lubrication and should be installed on the correct orientation

KJC, according to the book, the oiling grooves go against the crankshaft, hopefully this helps!
