I know this is an old thread but figured I would add some info. The Renntech article is very helpful but as of 2025, the replacement part is closer to $150. I removed the latch and then removed the plastic cover that houses the micro-switch. My micro-switch was fine but there is a plastic cam that presses against the micro-switch and it was sticking a bit. I added white lithium grease to this cam and the metal tongue of the micro-switch - fixed! I have a '98 so the latch has 2 cable pulls (one for the emergency release and the other for the lever release by the driver's sill. There were 2 grommets that helped hold these cables that disintegrated. I found some grommets and shaved off one side to replace these. Sorry - didn't take pictures but it is pretty straightforward.
