Used reservoir coolant tank, question
Hey guys is it safe to buy a used reservoir coolant tank? Someone parts out a Boxster 99 and he said the coolant is looking great and no crack no leak and its the genium one, he wants 150$ for it. Give an idea guys, thanks

Buying a '99 used tank would absolutely NOT be a prudent move...
|
Definitely not.
|
Ok thanks guys but u don't tell me why?

Hodan, Hodan, hodan,... You are not going to take the advice that everyone has been giving you to buy a genuine Porsche tank. I understand, it's a lot of money.
If you are considering buying a USED one from 1999 for $150, please spend a little more and get this one from Pelican Parts: Coolant Expansion Tank 99610614708Y - OE Supplier - 996-106-147-08-Y-INT | Pelican Parts http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1461518511.jpg It is made by a Porsche OE supplier. There is a good chance that it is exactly like the ones originally installed by Porsche, but without the Porsche brand (and extra mark-up). |
Sounds like a bad idea. Plastic can degrade with time, and these will also be under hot temperatures and pressure if the used engine they are off of has many running hours or miles.
Why start so many threads on the same topic? http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/61351-used-reservoir-coolant-tank-question.html http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-racing-forum/61350-buying-used-reservoir-tank.html http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/61315-reservoir-coolant-leak-new-cap.html http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/61305-does-anyone-bought-reservoir-tank-boxster-99-carpartswholesale.html http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/61218-boxster-1999-coolant-reservoir-tank-leaking.html http://986forum.com/forums/show-tell-gallery/61217-porsche-boxster-1999-reservoir-coolant-tank-leaking.html |

....why am I even bothering to type this. |
As the used parts supplier around here, I do get boxsters in with recently replaced tanks and brakes. Not so much with suspension pieces though
|
How about this, since you don't seem to want to take advice, you do whatever it is you want and stop asking for advice you won't take. The post from 78f350 is the biggest dose of common sense you're gonna get...if that don't work we can't help ya...
|
Here's another suggestion... use the search function and do your own research instead of making a nuisance of yourself asking the same question over and over. The topic of coolant tanks has been covered many times. There is a already wealth of advice here that you can ignore.
|
Very good ideas guys.. Thank you
|
With the insane amount of trouble and expense it takes to swap one of these things out, you don't want to be doing it again anytime soon! A proper OE new one will pay for itself in that regard.
|
Old plastic won't get better with age. Its a short term solution. Fix it once and fix it right.
|
I'm pretty frugal when it comes to money. I don't know your situation but you are doing your own labor and you want to do a used tank, do it. You will be better at doing it again when it fails. This is not a fun job. You won't get that much better at doing it the second time around.
If you can afford the new tank. Install it and put this situation to bed. |

It's weird. :p |
It's been said, but NO.
Even free the cost is too high. This job is a b!tch to do, so use your free labor and buy the best part available. |
I will take the genium one by tomorrow, I already have the price in the Porsche dealer, over here it 503+ taxes! Canadian$. Anyways that suck!! It cheaper in the states! With Pelicant they will charge me for shipping and customs become almost the same price! Thank you guys even some of you are very mean!!! Lolll
