Retro...
Even if its a suspect cap, there is a good chance that air has got into the system which means you will have to lift the D ring on the relief valve for a couple of heat cycles & top up the coolant accordingly.

Air pocket worked its way to the top?

That's what I'm thinking.
Nonetheless, I picked up a new cap and will switch them out in the morning.
Thanks Steve, will do! I guess I have to take that top cover off while the caps are removed to get to it.
Thanks again guys!

I let the car cool down for several hours. Coolant was low, so I topped it off (with the proper matching coolant) and put on the new cap. However I noticed that my new, new cap is very different from my old, new cap.

The one with the mesh vent is the one I'm replacing. The solid one is the new, new one. Does the difference matter?

What's the part number on the new new one, and on the old new one?

Both have the number: 996.106.447.04
At least I assume that's the part number? It's the only number I can find on either.
Thanks!

The one with the mesh looks like the first replacement cap I got for mine off of amazon. Had the same part number but was made by bilstein I think. It worked just fine as the coolant stopped dropping after I put it on. But ultimately I got the genuine one that has the mesh anyway and have the bilstein as a backup.

Ten months ago (July '15) I replaced the water pump and other items including the cap. I got the same part number as you posted including the .04 at the end. Mine is looks like the one you're replacing with the mesh.

Thanks for the input guys! I went ahead and put the new one on, and removed the cover so I can access the bleed valve. We'll see what happens.

It's running cool, and no puddles, but I wonder if the new cap has gone bad? It's as tight as I can get it. I alerted my shop, who is ready to come get me with his enclosed trailer if it looks bad.
This has been an...... Interesting week.
Updates to come I'm sure.

PS: no, I don't believe I changed the coolant with the new cap last year. But it had recently been flushed and serviced at the time.
Retro, sounds like you might have some air bubbles in the system. Did you try flipping up the release valve?
