I am talking about the long flat plastic piece that is underneath the car that goes between the floor pan and front of engine covering the engine mount. Mine is broken up in a couple of places. I have repaired it but I can see this part will not last indefinitely. The manual calls it a splash shield. What are the negatives for tossing this thing?

it protects fuel and coolant lines. I wouldn't buy used for this - the plastic on boxsters has a lifetime - chances are good that anything yo buy used will be brittle and, most likely, come broken (was broken on the car, got broken on removal by the wrecker, got broken in shipping - it is a big piece).

I think it has 2 purposes, to protect the hoses and lines running up the center,vans also for aerodynamics, at higher speeds the flat bottom may have some effect that helps. With what I am not sure

Amongst other things, it can impact engine cooling, depending upon which panel you are talking about. Replace it.

I have bought several plastic pieces from woody that were very good condition. If not he wont sell it.

The main aspect of this part is aerodynamics. Also it protects the under side of your car. As you're living in the USA and have ridicoulous speed limits the aerodynamics aspect might not be important. If you track the car i would replace it.

Of all the wrecked boxsters I get, I've only had a handful that came in with that last cover that wasn't broke. Heck, 1/3 of the boxster that come in don't even have that last one anymore. Same thing goes for the L shaped cover. They don't really get brittle because they don't get any sunlight to them. Other plastic part on these cars do though. I suggest buying new from your local dealer if their prices are reasonable. Only because shipping a used one might be expensive. So much so that the price might not be worth the little bit of savings. I think suncoast has them for like $125ish.

Oh, I did speak to a Spec Boxster friend and they do leave them on for aerodynamics and to protect underneath.

I thought I read somewhere that some of the aerodynamic plastic shields under the car are added extras you pay for at the dealer. However, the aerodynamics is a big part of this shield. Secondly, protecting parts. I'd replace it with used in near new shape or new. I've noticed on my 2006 Subaru and on my 2007, 2013 Honda CRV's, these shields exist and I am quite certain they provide the aerodynamics to boost the gas mileage up to high 20's or low 30's. The wind drag properties really work.

Does anyone know where I can find a diagram of what underbody splash shields SHOULD be there? I'm pretty sure my car was missing some when I got it, and more sure that some that remain need replacing.

Nope. Sounds expensive! Haha. (I didn't really know this was a thing, outside a dealership)
I've found a couple of diagrams online, but they seem to also include all of the upper heat shielding and such as well.... intermixed.... it's not very clear to me what goes where.

So, they're broken but I've got #1 and #4. I'm clearly missing #5. But I can't for the life of me figure out where #19 goes. Can anybody help here?

It runs up the left side of the car, close to the bottom of the door sill. IIRC.
