Tried that but can't seem to find any size that fits close enough to bang on . Any ideas of sizes?

I have to use a socket on about 25% of the cars that come into my yard because the key is missing. Hammer it on, break the lug bolt loose, and before you loosen it all the way. Take your hammer and tap it around the edge. The socket should work it's way off. I also start with that lug bolt, before removing the other four lug bolts.

And for me, a medium depth 12 point 11/16 socket has pulled 8 bolts so far and should be good for a few more.
