Anyone know what this clacking is?
I know this is the 986 forum, but thought I'd ask here too. Does anyone know what this engine clacking is?

I'm thinking lifter possibly.

Sounds like a lot more than a lifter. Loose or blown spark plug?

I'm guessing rod bearing.

Don't back away from buying this car. Turn and run. This is not an inexpensive problem, think 1/4 to more than the purchase price of the car and your in the ballpark. Glad it's not yours.

I would certainly pass as well, unless you already have a replacement engine ready to drop in.

OMG that thing sounds like a tractor!!! That might be the worst condition 2006 in the whole world. I mean the engine is toast, broken windshield, ripped seats, broken GPS stereo, foggy headlight, horrible paint. What on the car is good?

best case scenario, sticky lifter. Ask the seller if he's tried draining the oil, cycling a thinner weight and using some Swepco type additive, dump that and fill up with some new oil at regular weight. That could possibly get rid of that racket almost entirely and kind of makes sense since the seller says it quiets down after the engine warms up. Old oil sometimes builds up and becomes sludgy/varnishy. A noisy lifter is often a lifter that's stuck on something. Either way, never, ever buy without a PPI that includes both a compression and leak down test. You need both. The seller should provide this otherwise buyers will be running away making it a waste of his time.

Man, is that thing ragged out!
Unless it's cheap enough to warrant putting in a new engine, I'd run screaming from it.
Noise could be anything (blown plug, rod bearing, bad manifold, bad head, mayyyyybe a lifter, but it's awfully loud), but why start out like that. Sounds frightening.

+1
Sounds like a rod and piston slap
I had a stuck tappet that is way louder.

Parts car or shop rebuilder.
Sorry for the owner. I'd only buy that if I had a shop and a line on a healthy M97 motor + didn't mind fixing all the cosmetic damage (I shudder to think what it looks like under that bra, especially in HI).
