Haven't done the math in a while but it used to consistently be in the high teens. If it ever hit 20mpg I was pretty happy about it. My commute is short and generally not over 50mph aside from a 1 mile stretch of highway that I hit (with a lot of throttle).

You keep your gall fill up receipts and write your mileage on them. Then create a database and track you mileage, how many gallons you put in the car since you last fill and your new mileage on your next reciept. Once you have 2 receipts you can calculate your last trip from the first mileage record to the second and how much gas you put in the car the second time and see you traveled X miles with X galons of gas give you miles/galon of whatever. Then everytime you fill up just add it to the database and you can see exactly what your MPG was for each time you fill up.

You can then make your database do other things like average miles per fill up, average price of a gallon, average MPG and stuff like that as well.

my daily commute is 27 miles, with 24 miles on the interstate. i avg about 24 mpg for the commute and about 29 mpg on weekend trips. this if for an 03 S

drove across desert to Phoenix from just outside LA - about 340 miles one-way. with cruise set at 82mph, I was getting approx 32mpg Also got a bit of sunburn

Hahaha, I didn't mean "I wish I knew how you guys were CALCULATING" MPG, I meant "I can't believe you guys are getting such good mileage!"

Although you do raise a good point--if we're not all using the same method for calculating our MPG, this exercise is a bit inaccurate. I'm just going by what the onboard computer tells me my MPG is. I reset it whenever I fill up and then notice where it's at when I refuel.

Mine's always around 17 to 18 MPG when all's said and done. Not enough freeway driving I guess...

That's what I notice most about the fuel economy in the 987, in that the deltas you see on other convertibles, i.e. top-down vs. top-up or highway vs. city are much wider in the Box.

Driving around town with the top lowered I can watch the fuel gauge go down between intersections, but on the highway, with the top up the Box is a Porsche Prius. On this theme, have you guys seen the low fuel message in the 987 OBC? It says "Consider Remaing Range". I thought it was pretty amusing.

Eric - get a job 50 miles from your home and drive around 75-85 mph to and from. And don't use use your 987 for short trips to the grocery store. BTW, Karen and I just got a Vespa for our town errands.

A Vespa. That sounds good. But driving from Mira Mesa to Poway every day (a wonderful, traffic light strewn drive ) probably wouldn't be so fun on one...

Alright guys, just got back from Washington DC.

We had a good trip. 750 miles in 11 hours each way.

A little disappointed with the MPG though :

1st tank - 22 mpg
2nd tank - 24 mpg
3rd tank - 23 mpg
4th tank - 23 mpg
5th tank - 22 mpg

Not as good as I expected. I average 21 mpg going to work and back.

Cruise was set at 80 mph, AC on, fully loaded ( me, wife, luggage )

This is in a 99 2.5 with 50k miles on the odo.

Anything I should take a look at ?

Did you reset the OBC at each fill-up? Your mileage seems low to me. Ellen just got 27.9 making that trip to West Virginia and back. If you're not resetting, your mileage is being averaged with all your previous driving.

No OBC on my 99. I was just dividing miles driven / gallons purchased.

Seriously, I'd put a tune-up on it and change the air filter if you haven't done it lately. I think you should be doing a little better than 22-24 mpg highway.
