Yours probably doesn't need replacing. The Bendix can hang up and not retract fast enough after the engine fires. IIRC, there's a DIY here to lube it.

The starter job is a pain due to location just so you know. I replaced mine but steve is correct on this. What youre hearing is the bendix drive not retracting. I replaced mine with a salvage unit from an 08 cayman. 50 bucks on ebay.

Yeah it turns the engine over perfectly fine, just doesn't retract in time like you said.

However like jdraupp said, it's not easy to get to and I don't want to have to pull it back out in 6 months and lube it again.

I will try to find that DIY thread and see how long the lube job has lasted for people.


EDIT: If I do go replacement route, what do you think of the starter I'm looking at?
