What do you guys think of this starter?
My starter is screeching more and more frequently. I have to do some work on my engine, that will give me good access to the starter, so I should replace it then. I have a Tiptronic trans and this stater specifies for that trans.

Yours probably doesn't need replacing. The Bendix can hang up and not retract fast enough after the engine fires. IIRC, there's a DIY here to lube it.
|
The starter job is a pain due to location just so you know. I replaced mine but steve is correct on this. What youre hearing is the bendix drive not retracting. I replaced mine with a salvage unit from an 08 cayman. 50 bucks on ebay.

However like jdraupp said, it's not easy to get to and I don't want to have to pull it back out in 6 months and lube it again. I will try to find that DIY thread and see how long the lube job has lasted for people. EDIT: If I do go replacement route, what do you think of the starter I'm looking at? . |
I used the word "starter" in the search, gave me 6 pages to look through and I didn't see the DIY on the starter.
I did see where people had the starter rebuilt and the noise came back fairly soon, one of them was 2 weeks later. Think I'll stick with the new starter route. |
Try here...
Kram,
I searched for "lubricate starter bendix" and got these threads. http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/25477-strange-startup-sound.html http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/28002-grinding-noise-start.html |
Have you checked at the local auto parts store? You can usually get a good price, long warranty and if something isn't right you can bring it back.
|
My 4 choices from local auto parts stores. All of them remanufactured starters, cost more, not in stock, core charge and has to be shipped, so I would be paying shipping cost and tax on them.

Both advance and autozone have lifetime warranties.

I'd pay the extra $33 at Autozone, deal face to face with the vendor and score a lifetime warranty, but that's just me. ;)
