Litronics Headlights on CL for $700

In 2001 the MSRP sticker price for Xenon Headlights was $1070.

I'm already halfway into a litronic upgrade project. http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/54697-advice-used-litronics.html
I'm going to need to polish mine before they look that good. Someone is going to get a great deal.
Pelican is listing new lights for $1305 (Left) and $1191 (Right) Project 85: Litronic Headlamp Kit Upgrade - Page 1
So if someone charged you $3200 a side that seems quite a bit too high.

Are these "plug and play"? I have standard headlights on my 2001 S and would love to upgrade. What else would I need to buy in order to make these work?
Thanks in advance.

Lower price reflects that they are aftermarket. Sounds like a question for our resident litronics development team (if Hella and Porsche units are one and the same).

It is my understanding that they are the same brand; Hella, Bosch, Magneti Marelli, Automotive Lighting are all the same headlight with same part #'s, mold marks, etc.
Hella makes the bulb sockets and connectors, Automotive Lighting is just the name of the joint project between Bosch and MM. Same...

No. They require level sensors and controllers. You can run without them, but who knows what position they were left in (one may be pointing at the ground, etc).

So the retro designed by Nine8Six is still the only "plug and play" upgrade for my standard lights?

All factory and aftermarket Litronics are "plug and Play". Particlewave was referring to factory-installed self-leveling Litronics. The wiring in those can't really be re-created as a DIY upgrade.
You lose the self-leveling function if you just slide in the Litronics to upgrade the halongen units.
But I'm pretty sure that these aftermarket lights ChuckW has posted don't have self-leveling and instead use the special tool to manually lower or raise the projector height into a fixed position.
I'm not sure how you would correct the position of the projector in a used factory self-leveling unit if went into a new car. I'm going to guess that you can still use the special tool on those since the housing is probably the same?

The person that wrote that ad seems to be a little confused. There are no aftermarket headlights for these cars except for the LED style eBay units.
The headlights in the ad are OEM.
Hella is OEM.
There's only 1 "Litronics".

^ I think he's confused the way I was confused. If you walk into the Porsche dealership and pay out the nose you get the Porsche branded OEM units. If you order Litronics online from a non-Porsche website you get these Hella units that don't come in Porsche packaging?

Many owners of cars with standard halogen lights have retrofitted litronics w/o the level sensors and controllers. I know I have, and I've had no issues.

Many aftermarket lights specifically state they don't meet DOT guidelines. Says right in the ad or website or on the light.
The Lits I refer to came in a Porsche box and my car has the leveling sensors on the control arms.

Tim - if those were ordered from DE directly then yes, most likely the price you saw on your invoice is correct. Things/tax/etc works a bit differently in Germany. Especially when it comes to car parts :/
You'd think the parts are cheaper when purchased in the automaker's backyard... well sadly, its the opposite. Go figure.....
