I pulled out two IMSBs recently. One from an engine that had a broken piston rod and the other engine that was going in to replace it. Both were dual row over 120k miles and looked like they were in good shape visually. Both also had a very little bit of roughness as I rotated them. They had allowed oil to seep trough the bearing into the shaft tube and neither had any grease of any kind in the bearing. The oil trapped inside the Intermediate shaft smelled terrible. My understanding is that the trapped oil becomes acidic, then eats away the bearing.
