IMS condition

So my car is completed . new bearing , clutch and cam cover reseal . I got my original IMS bearing to look over and it seems to be in decent shape . It does not look like a failure would occur anytime soon . the seal was letting oil in . The bearing moves smoothly and no free play in it . no need to worry anymore after 5 years of ownership .

Nice looking single row. Mine was a double row and came out looking perfect. Oil seems to penetrate quite well. You can sleep well now

I pulled out two IMSBs recently. One from an engine that had a broken piston rod and the other engine that was going in to replace it. Both were dual row over 120k miles and looked like they were in good shape visually. Both also had a very little bit of roughness as I rotated them. They had allowed oil to seep trough the bearing into the shaft tube and neither had any grease of any kind in the bearing. The oil trapped inside the Intermediate shaft smelled terrible. My understanding is that the trapped oil becomes acidic, then eats away the bearing.
