IMS bearing Used?
I was just browsing eBay and saw a USED LN IMS bearing. I like a good deal, but who would think that a used IMS bearing is a good idea at any price?
Anybody want a used oil filter? I got a few only 3000 miles on em. Probably good for another 2-5K.

Wouldn't put it my car if it was free. Why would anyone go through the labor/cost of replacing the IMS just to put a used one in?

There is a larger problem here. Installing an IMS bearing puts all the load on the outer race and none on the balls and cages. Extracting an IMS does exactly the opposite, all the load is on the balls and cages. This is why LN tell people to never reuse one of their bearings, even if it only got cocked during installation, because the ceramic balls are now compromised. Once it has been pulled on by the center bolt, it is toast..............

I may be wrong, but that bearing has a oil seal on it - I think the LN bearings are open sided!
There are a load of IMS bearings on ebay - all a bit dodgy if you ask me.

The back side of the bearing will have an oil seal of some sort to keep oil out of the IMS tube.

The earlier LNE bearings had bearing covers (not seals), in fact both of the LNE bearing I purchased in the past had these covers on them. LNE has since eliminated these covers for better lubrication, I believe.
I have two bearing assemblies for sale if anyone is interested.

Once that bearing was extracted, it was compromised..
Now, someone will buy it, it will fail and the guy who bought it will claim he was the original purchaser and then LN gets the blame. Its happened before!

Wow. I've seen this before. Original bearing fails then a replacement bearing is put in. Then the engine fails. Wait, I spent good money on a new IMS bearing, let me pull it and re-use it. You can see metallic debris all over the rear seal. Bearing is guaranteed to be contaminated and will fail, guaranteed.

Not mentioned: You're getting the new flange, which is the high-dollar part. That bearing can be had online for less than $50. Of course, $350 is outrageous.

Being "Jake Raby", I expect that you are right, but hopefully the really cheap ones will Darwin themselves back out of the market promptly.
For the next few years I hope to get one or two a year that needs TLC and bring them back to a decent standard.

Yes, and I don't mean to argue, I'm a learner. My thought is that the ones that are bought and not maintained correctly will not be cruising our highways for long. I have seen plenty of 944s, 928s & 924s on Craigslist in deplorable condition. A portion of all models are destined for that.
I work on cars recreationally. I can afford to lose (a little) money and time taking a neglected car and making it nice again. In the process I learn to improve my "Keeper".
