Hi,

I am ready to bring out the hammer!

I am trying to remove the CDR-220 radio using the special tools I purchased from discount car stereo along with the cable to hook an ipod up.

Their instructions are:
HOW TO USE
* Insert key into slots with straight edge facing away from the radio (see detailed image)
* Push in on key until it locks (clicks). Do the same in other slots. Pull radio outwards using key rings (see detailed image)
* To release keys simply depress spring tabs on either side of radio pull keys outwards.

I have inserted the keys into the two slots at the bottom of the radio, but no click and they just slip in and out.

What is the problem?

push them in farther?
flip them around?

they will click in place and you remove them once the radio is out by pushing on the release on the side of the radio

John - sometimes they are a bear to remove. Wiggle, jiggle, push, move back and forth, etc.

If they are slipping in and out, you aren't catching the tab. Try pushing it a little more. I've had to apply a few "love taps" before to get them to catch the tab and remove them. They'll come, just keep after it.

Presuming you are inserting them in the slots the correct way, they should simply click without much hesitation. If they aren't, I'm thinking maybe the locking mechanism was broken by a previous owner? They are quite a fight to get out. I think I got cut up while removing mine. Fellow members have suggested using two screwdrivers to pull the unit out for easier grip. The locking mechanism allows that kind of force to be exerted on itself. Inserting them back was pretty painful for me too and at one point I was pretty frustrated, enough to snap the locks off. Other people suggest it slides in no problem. Explore the idea it may be broken.

Well I cannot get a "click" and they slide in and out. These are the tools.

Are they the wrong tools?

Should look more like these:

Mercedes Radio Removal Tools s C E SL CL ml CLK SLK AMG | eBay

Your local BestBuy or other type place should also have them... They are only needed for removal so you might consider swinging by one and see if you can slip them a few $ to have them just remove radio for you...

you have the wrong tool
the one Burg Boxster posted are the correct ones
they need to have that little notch in order for it to latch

Grrr. OK. I ordered from the link you provided. Another week!

This was the text for these tools:

"The BRRT Radio Removal Tool is required to remove the Becker Radio found in Audi, Seat, Ferrari, Ford (Europe), Mercedes (1993-02), Seat, Skoda, Porsche, Land Rover etc. The Becker radios in these select vehicles has 2 or 4 slots in the upper or lower corners and removing them is not possible without these special removal keys."

Ah now I see.. I think some model years did use those. I could be wrong but I say that because when my tools arrived, I had another friend over (also an ex- Boxster owner) and he said he knew exactly how to use the tools and he jumped into my drivers seat and tried to insert them and pull them towards and away from each other sort of like in a scissor motion. Judging by the way the notches are on your tools, that explanation now makes sense. Try as he might he could not get it to catch, he swore that's how it was in his car. I believe him because he did a lot of work on his car and he is very knowledgeable and handy. Then I read the instructions that came with my tool and out came the radio after some serious tugging.

Universal OEM DIN Tool Pair For select VW and Mercedes models at Crutchfield.ca

These are the ones Crutchfield told me to get to take my radio out. Haven't done it yet, but these guys know their stuff. Mine's an 02 Box, so the year might make a difference?

If you haven't bought radio keys yet, you could use the set I have.

The tool that Giller shows is a similar tool as I have. The tool that others use has a hole in the center of the shaft. Is that hole what locks the tool into the radio?

That would rock! I'm working on painting my trim/console - didn't realize you have to take the radio out to take off that trim piece. Sweet!

I tried on and off for two days to get my OEM radio out with no luck, I went to a sound shot and told the guys I just want it out.....a guy came out to the car and had it out in 2 minutes....he said 10 bucks....I gave him 20 and felt like I got a bargain.
