Cracked Transmission cas Boxster S 2002.
So I finally bought a 2002 S with 20K on it drove it for good 1k and craked the transmission case on pothole somehow. Now the insurance guy is ready to get it fixed but needs a used trans with similar miles. Any suggestions on where I can find one ?
Might as well get IMS done when the trans is out right?
FYII its a manual 6speed

New trans housing is like $750.

Does it make sense to get a new trans case and transfer all stuff or just get a whole transmission?

New case is 750.
New trans is 9000.
Guys on here know what will fit.

+1 on the case.
Even a used transmission will cost you around $2500 from a salvage, and you don't know the condition of the trans.
Replace the case on yours, and you know for sure you have a low mileage transmission.

A 2002 /20k miles 6 speed transaxle is a rare bird.Most will have way more miles.Suggest you do not accept a high miles one because of wear issues with 2nd gear and the 'sealed' shaft bearings. A reman unit may be the best option IF it comes with a parts & labor warranty.

the crack is near the drain plug so its just a small hairline crack but the insurance guy wants to replace the trans instead of welding it.

He may "want" to replace it but as I said , be carefully you get an equivalent one in terms of wear.That will be quite a difficult searching exercise to get a 20k miles transaxle.

The reman is only as good as the rebuild guy and the parts he uses.You would need a very good warrenty!
The other option was mentioned earlier-swap your internals into a good case. That should be much easier to find than the alternatives.
