What RPM do you cruise around at?

The engine is willing across a broad band of RPMs. What range do you maintain in:

City/neighborhood driving

Freeway driving?

3k-4k freeway

bottom line, they don't like to be below 3k much...

Until the fluids are fully warmed up I keep it below 3K. Which seems to take a while if its city driving. Once everything is up to temp I never cruise below 3K.
I suspect a lot folks do the opposite to save gas and to go "easy" on the engine. wrong move.

During warm up just about touching 3k on shift. Mid 2k cruising for first few miles
After warm up 1st,2nd maybe 3rd touching 4k. If road allows then 5-6k shifts
Cruise right around 3K all roads

Never cruising below 3000rpm. These engines like high rpms and their oil being splashed around by the crankshaft.

Get great MPG at 1200. That's like 25 mph in 4th
The only way I can get down to 1200 and still be moving is hwy heavy traffic.1st gear just trying to creap along at 3-5 mph

If you're cruising your 986 at 1200 rpm then you better keep Jake's number in your rolodex. You're going to need it.

Higher revs (4-6K) not always necessary but unlikely to damage the engine.
Whereas lugging the engine will.

I normally cruise between 3-4k, closer to 3k around town, and closer to 4k on the freeway. I try to avoid cruising below 2500RPM or above 5k for extended periods of time. 6500RPM is always fun when I get an on-ramp to myself.

I think everyone shpuld just turn idle up to 3k to begin with
