Magnet in tiptronic sump

Anyone watch the Wheeler Dealer episode on the Boxster? I just did and found it very interesting that in doing a service on the tiptronic they found a magnet in the sump. Is this really the case on all tips? More interesting is that if this is true why isn't the same done on the manual trans and the oil pan, especially when you consider the know IMS issue? Anyone have any insight?

6-speed has a magnet

It does not matter whether it is tiptronic or manual trans. it is a good idea. I have the IMS Guardian which monitors for metal and the beauty of the latter is a light and a warning sound come on in the dash if there is sufficient metal between the points on the pigtail plug sensor.

Of course with a magnetic plug you have to take it out to check for metal which is a pita. I am not ashamed of pushing Jake Raby's products if they can give me peace of mind and avert a disaster.

Already sold on Jake's stuff. I just had my IMS replaced.

So there is a magnet in both trannys so why does the factory not put one in the oil sump? Doesn't seem logical but then again either does the IMS.

Oil sump is aluminum alloy so magnet won't stick to it. Trans use a bracket to hold magnet in place which they need since the lubricant is only changed every 90K miles.
Similar mag bracket in the oil sump would block oil flow to the pickup tube. Oil gets drained more often so you can get by without a magnet, but I install LN magnetic drainplug at 1st oil change.

I'm assuming you are talking about a manual transmission magnet ??
Can you see this magnet when you drop the fluid - I don't remember any magnet on the drain bolt or otherwise when I replaced the fluid last year.......
