Thinking of Ordering a 2014 Boxster S ?
 
I'm thinking of selling the Dangermobile and ordering a paint to sample 2014 Boxster S in Mexico Blue. Not sure if I can make the switch from the raw, visceral feel of the D-mobile to a boulevardier though. Any thoughts ?

Yes. I drove a 2013 briefly. But, obviously I need to test one further. Right now it's purely an impulse on my part. I've got an itch from something I guess.

I like the looks of the new Boxster... Reminds me of the 2004 Carrera GT, one of my favorite body designs.

Maybe too similar a car even if ya could. Maybe keep yours and get the new Cayman?
The color is different, but it might be kind of a chicks color, IDK.....

I'd like to keep both vehicles. But, space is a problem. I've got 35k+ in mods in the D-mobile, and it only has 22k original miles. Still, I'll probably get slaughtered on a sale. :(

That's a good argument to keep it.
Lemme ask ya, is the new one a better car than the one you have considering all the mods. (Not including aesthetic mods)
Im not sure the new one is different enough to warrant the upcharge...
Tell us abt the test drive, whats it like?

Again, it was only a brief test drive. However, the vehicle felt very refined and modern as compared to my 986. Bear in mind, that the Dangermobile has an extremely dialed in and tactile feel to it. It's all business. Whether or not I'd miss that over time, remains uncertain in my mind. The interesting thing about the D-mobile, is that's it's undergone so much cosmetic treatment, that it almost looks like a current model. People don't seem to view it as a 13 year old Porsche - if that makes any sense ?

Just to make you feel more comfortable, here in Australia, the Boxster S in Special Order Mexico Blue would cost you $A135,990 PLUS taxes and PLUS on road costs (+/- $US130,000) BEFORE you add even the slightest extras.....The paint alone costs $10,000 extra !!!
And this is after Porsche Australia have recently REDUCED their prices to be more "competative" in the marketplace.....
If you lived this side of the pond, (which you don't) I surmise you would keep the Dangermobile and pocket (invest) the rather large difference....

Sorry, rant over - this has got nothing to do with your prospective 981 purchase......

From what I've seen,your Pcar is so much diff from any other car on the road,Pcar or not that you might win out by keeping it.

Add something simple and fun that is a world's different experience.My older JEEP Wrangler is a hoot.No space problem as they did not become large vehicles until 2006.Mine is a 97,first year for the return of the classic round headlight style.

Looking at that parked next to my 986 is hilarious!Double fun driveway.

I've been a very similar spot recently...


I think the new 981 Boxster/Cayman is among the best cars that I've ever driven. The truth is, I would probably still be driving a 986S if I hadn't test driven one...

One thing to keep in mind is that the 981 is much bigger. It definitely loses some of the tactile feel compared to the 986. Drive the car, shift the car, push the car and compare it to the 986. The biggest difference, is the new car is very poised but it achieves that poise with less driver involvement (the steering wheel just doesn't tell you much). I was amazed at how easily the 981 went through the set of turns as compared to the 986. It's as if the 981 isn't even working hard to go faster.

I particularly like the look of the new Cayman. And, some of the new color combinations are pure awesomeness (check out the two-tone Agate/Amber interior with your custom exterior color...). That color rocks in person, but looks like a pumpkin on the configuration. IGNORE the configuration and see it with your eyes.

I came to the conclusion after driving one, that I will absolutely buy a 981 (someday).

In the end, I bought a 993 (1996 911). Why? I already made a decision to move on from the 986. The 981 Cayman S was an $80,000 car (!!!). I spent less than half on the air-cooled 911. I couldn't justify the money for the Cayman after driving the 911. The air-cooled 911 isn't depreciating. I figure I can drive it and sell it in a decade for the same (or similar money). The 981 would lose a significant percentage of it's value in just a few years to depreciation.

In the end, for me it really wasn't about money. I could easily afford the 981 if I wanted it. But I figured it would always be there. The time to buy the 993 is now before it gets too old or too "collectible".

Check out the 981, and don't rule out an air-cooled 911 either.

Buy the car and then go see the DR about that itch. Maybe from a JD girl?

I'm a bit confused Johnny. A short time ago you were contemplating selling your Boxster because you live 2 miles down an unmaintained gravel road and have to garage it 10 miles away. Has this changed?

You could always take the cost of that new car, add that to what you will lose on the existing one if you sold it, and use that money to have your street asphalted so you can park your car at home.

A nicely optioned PTS 981 S will be just north of $90. So, if you have about $75 cash in hand ready, plus another $9 to cover sales tax, go for it! Assuming you can get about $20 for the dangermobile.

Or buy the base Boxster in Mexico Blue, ship it to the guys in Florida doing 400 HP 991 S engine swaps for about an additional $22 and you'll have a real beast and a Carrera killer.

Why would you want a new one? People are a creature of habit and I believe that you would drive it as much as your old one - that is not very much. And assuming that you sold the old one, you would be out mucho $$$$. Does not make much sense. :confused:

My garaging situation has changed for the better. I found a location that's closer and more accommodating than the last.

The price is quite high I know. Which brings me back to the ongoing dilemma of wanting a 360 Modena. My concern with the Ferrari at this point is age, and cost of maintenance. Not so much the required maintenance, but the small irritating things that can go wrong.

Figure about $10 per year for that. Some years less, so more. Plus insurance.

I'm with others. The Dangermobile is a unique car that you've invested a lot of time, money, and creativity into. If I were in your shoes, I'd be too nervous about the double whammy of losing a lot of money on the sale of a heavily modified car AND the rapid depreciation of a new car.

I'd aim for one or the other, if you really want to mix things up. Since you're already invested in the Dangermobile, I'd aim for a slightly used new-to-you car (assuming you really want a rotation in the stable). The other day I saw a 996 GT3 Mk1 sell for under $40! That's a whole lot of car for the money.

I'm in a similar dilemma (per my earlier post). I'm itching for something new, and I cannot decide on whether it should be through customizing my '99 Boxster or investing in a new car. (What doesn't help me is I have my eye on a certain beautiful 993 cab that would require a wonderful, long roadtrip home as delivery down Hwy 1.)

If money is no issue, then take a look at what else you could get in the similar price range. If you're set on mid-engine configurations, your options will certainly be more limited.

P.S. You cannot tell me the Dangermobile isn't still working its magic on the Danger Girls.

I say go for it. While one may feel remorse/regret about a change, there are also nice things, like getting what you want and new car feel (built to order -- rather than waiting and wasting time searching for what someone else wanted).

you should put Danger Mobile on Ebay with a high reserve to see what sort of interest you get.
You never know if there's some Billionaire in Beijing who lusted after the original 986 Boxster back when he was a regular dude and China only had ~1 Billion of GDP.
